Reducing Home Page Bounce Rate

August 11th, 2008 by Krunal

Here are 7 tips I’ve found can reduce bounce rate. They really do work, unless you’re an overworked blogger who’s running an agency, writing a book and has 2 kids under the age of 10:

  1. Answer questions. When someone comes to your site, they’re probably not thinking “Gee, I wonder what their office looks like.” Instead, they’re asking, “Do you have the mountain bike I really want”? Which question do you answer? Answer the latter and you’ll keep more visitors. (Inspired by Specialized.com)
  2. Simplify. Believe it or not, every person in your company does not get to contribute one link to your home page. The average person is most comfortable processing 5-7 choices at a time. Don’t overwhelm them. Simplify by removing options or at least grouping and prioritizing them. How many links does Google have on their home page? How about Apple? Look at your traffic reports, find out what visitors really want, and then link to that and only that. If anyone in your office whines, blame me.
  3. Remove autoplay videos. My first reflex if a video starts playing and music that sounds like a bad 70’s porn flick comes streaming out of my speakers is to hit the back button. I’m willing to bet most people feel the same way. Remove the video altogether, or at least have it paused.
  4. Improve pageload time. If your home page takes more than 8 seconds to look intelligible, you’re probably shedding visitors. Note I said ‘look intelligible’, not ‘load completely’. If there’s a huge image or a video that takes longer, that’s OK, as long as it doesn’t prevent the rest of the page from loading. Trim 2-3 seconds off your pageload time and watch the bounce rate drop. Proof? When I first relaunched my blog, a bug in the code led to 10-15 second load times. Once we fixed it, the bounce rate dropped by 30%.
  5. Write a better headline. A punchy, take-action headline will keep visitors. Instead of “Enterprise Security Solutions for A Web 2.0 Workplace”, try “Protect Your Network” (I made this example up).
  6. Move the important stuff up. If you have a store, show products near the top of the page. If you’re promoting a candidate, put that message at the top. Always put your call to action up high, front-and-center. If you’re uncomfortable doing that, you may have the wrong call to action.
  7. Dump the popup. I shouldn’t even have to say this any more, but if you have a popup or other annoyance on your home page, get rid of it. You’re losing a lot more than you’re gaining, plus you’re making me hate you.

SEO Techniques for Web Designers

August 11th, 2008 by Krunal

We all know the work of web designer. The beautiful design of a website can attracts the internet user but if it not properly not optimized then no one will reach to the website to see the design. A seo optimize a website that will help a website to rank high in search engines. But some of the seo knowledge will help the designers to make the website search engine as well as human friendly.

Here are some useful tips that will help designer to make search engine friendly website :

1. Try to focus on plain websites. It loads quickly and easily crawl by search engines.

2. Choose page name relevant to the page content and should be human-friendly. If a page provides seo tips for webdesigners then it should be webdesigners-seo-tips.html not 16.html or webdesigners55.html. Also avoid underscore, use hyphen between the words.

3. The page should be content rich and keep the content inside the P tag.

4. Avoid use of table. If possible replace the table using div.

5. Optimize the images used on the website. It will help to increase the loading speed of images.

6. Add alt tags to the images and it should be relevant to the images.

7. Avoid use of javascript. The javascript creates problem in crawling the pages by search engines. Use external javascript file.

8. For better navigation, use bread crumbs. For example Home >> Tips >> Web Designer Tips.

9. Create sitemap for a website. It help robots to go to any page from this page.

10. Donot add CSS in the web pages. It will make a web page heavy. Use external CSS file.

11. Remove useless text from the page like comments text.

12. Avoid use of frame.

13. Use text navigation instead of image navigation. Text navigation will help users and search engines to navigate easily and it will help to increase ranking of the page in the search engines by a particular keyword used as anchor text.

14. Keep the page size not more than 30-50 kb.

15. Use heading tags for the target keyword of the page and also for the heading of the page.

Social Networking & Viral Marketing in India

August 8th, 2008 by Krunal

In today’s context social networking is about connecting with people at a low cost with existing devices and technology. Until a few years ago it used to be that you had six degrees of separation to connect with anybody in the world. With the advent of networking tools and search it has become easier to span those six degrees of separation and the ability to connect is now just a couple of mouse clicks away.

In India social networking might evolve differently when compared to the USA or other countries. But, before delving deeper into how social networking will evolve in India let us look at what is social networking.

What is Social Networking? Social network is defined as “a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of relations, such as values, visions, idea, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade, web links, sexual relations, disease transmission (epidemiology), or airline routes.” (Wikipedia)

This social networking concept spread to the computer world in the 1970s when researchers envisioned people connecting and interacting via computers. So in the pre-Mosaic and pre-Netscape days of the197s to mid-1990s you had Usenet groups for various interests. For instance, soc.culture.indian was a Usenet group where many Indian students in the USA got their questions answered about travel, graduate programs or connecting with their classmates. Out of soc.culture.indian grew various Usenet groups for different Indian states and languages.

During the dotcom boom you had social networking groups like sixdegrees.com, classmates.com , epinion, and others. What was different about these groups was an instant ability to browse and search through archives in an easy way. Then in early 2002 a new avatar of social networking took off in a big way with the launch of Friendster, Orkut, MySpace, Facebook and Linkedin among others. What these sites have in common is a rich (including multimedia) feature set that allows for sharing information easily and some sites allow for integration of third-party widgets and applications. So, social networking in its different avatars has been around in the USA for over 30 years (if you factor in the Usenet groups.)

Viral Marketing India:
In India social networking is a relatively new concept due to obvious reasons: low penetration of PCs and laptops and patchy broadband connections. What that means is that while people were aware of these social networking groups and applications they had limited means to access them. However in the last four years the social networking landscape has changed quite a bit in India. In a relatively short period of time certain social networking sites like Orkut and Fropper appear to have taken off, and new ones like Linkedin and Facebook are beginning to find traction among Indian users. What is driving this traction is still unclear. Is it the novelty of being able to network with people? Or, is there a genuine interest driving this adoption?

Explore the Negative Factors or techniques affecting the SEO Industry

May 14th, 2008 by Krunal

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is all about increasing the number of visitors who come to your website and enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine. A number of factors are important when optimizing a website to be search engine and user friendly, including the content and structure of the website’s copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags, backlinks and the submission process.

Following are some of the factors or techniques negatively affecting the SEO industry:

     Dynamically created pages

     Sub Domains

     Cloaking (or Masking)

     Spamdexing

     Link Spamming

     Page Jacking

     Mirrored (or duplicate) websites

     Hidden Text

     Create Doorway pages

1.   Dynamically created pages: Dynamically created pages are web pages which have more than one parameter in a website URL.

(e.g.) http://www.seo.com/main.php?category=books&subject=biography

Such type of pages in a website is database driven. Multiple parameters in a dynamic URL (?, .php, .pl, .cgi extension) can often mean that a search engines spider will choose to ignore the document. So, such URLs are not very search engine friendly.

Google is presently able to index dynamically generated pages. However, because their web crawler can easily overwhelm and crash sites serving dynamic content, they limit the amount of dynamic pages they index.

So, Search Engine representatives have long urged website creators to limit dynamic parameters to two, optimally to one so that spiders will easily crawl them.

2.   Sub Domains: Many large Web portals and online retailers structure their sites using subdomains (e.g.http://groups.seo.com). A subdomain lets you brand your different specialties with your primary domain name. Subdomains are considered to be independent web sites even though they may share the same IP address. But do check with your Web host to make sure you’re sharing an IP address with legitimate sites. Otherwise, this could get your site banned from search engines. Some legitimate sites make the mistake of using duplicate content in their subdomains. This can also make the search engines treat duplicate content in subdomains particularly harshly.

3. Cloaking (or Masking): Cloaking is the SEO process of delivering one version of a page to a user, and a different version to another user such as a search engine. The benefit is code and copyright protection. We can custom build a page for the user. If the user is a search engine, we want to give it our best most optimized stuff. If it is a user, we want to give it a pretty page that is tricked out for navigation and usability.

Mouse-over cloaking is a new SEO technique used widely now-a-days. When a visitor clicks on a website after performing a search query in the search engines, they are directed to a website or web page which is gibberish, but the search engines have indexed it highly. With just the slightest jostle of their mouse, the visitor is quickly re-directed to the site which has allegedly been “SEO optimized.”

4. Spamdexing: Spamdexing or search engine spamming is the practice of deliberately and dishonestly manipulating search engines by SEO’s to increase the chance of a website or page being placed close to the beginning of search engine results.

(e.g.) Metatag Stuffing: Repeating keywords in the Meta tags, and using keywords that are unrelated to the website’s content.

Keyword Stuffing: Repeated use of a word to increase its frequency on a page. Presently, search engines have the ability to analyze a page for Keyword stuffing and determine whether the frequency is above a “normal” level. The keyword density of a webpage should be between 2- 7%.

5. Link Spamming: The submission of pages that are intended to rank artificially high by various unethical techniques. These can include submitting hundreds of slightly different pages designed to rank high, small invisible text, or word scrambled pages.

(e.g.) Link farming: A set of web pages that have been built for the sole purpose of increasing the number of incoming links to a web site. Link farms are a known SEO spam tactic and sites that participate in them are likely to be penalized or banned from the major search engines.

6. Page Jacking: Often when your competitor gets a high ranking page under quality keywords the first thing that will happen is your competitor’s page gets stolen (called Page Jacking). It is the SEO process of duplicating a high ranking competitor’s page, but the page is redirected to your website. Many search engines, upon seeing a duplicate page will delete the competitor’s website from the directory leaving the fake page in its place.

7. Mirrored (or Duplicate) websites: Mirrored websites are nothing but, creating duplicate sites having the same images & the content with the same number of pages in both the websites. In this case, one of the website stands a high chance of being rejected by the search engines for indexing.

8. Hidden Text: Hidden text is links with the same background color as that of the website. This SEO spam technique is used to increase your page rank of your website.A user to your site may accidentally land to this hidden link & the page thereafter.

.9. Create Doorway pages: A doorway page is simply an additional page on your website that is created to target a specific keyword not related to the website and then submitted to the search engines. Such doorway pages drain away the link popularity of a website and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include websites with unsavory or illegal content.

So be aware of the above explained negative factors while optimizing a website.

Get Better Search Engine Rankings with RSS

May 12th, 2008 by Krunal

RSS is the latest craze in online publishing. But what  exactly is RSS?RSS or Rich Site Syndication is a file format similar to XML, and is used by publishers to make their content available to others in a format that can be universally understood.RSS allows publishers to “syndicate” their content through the distribution of lists of hyperlinks. It has actually been around for a while, but with the advent of spam filters and online blogging, it is fast becoming the choice of ezine publishers who want to get their message across to their subscribers.

However, not much attention has been given to the advantages RSS provides for search engine optimization. Why Search Engines Love RSSMany SEO experts believe that sites optimized around themes,or niches, where all pages correspond to a particular subject or set of keywords, rank better in the search engines. For example, if your website is designed to sell tennis rackets, your entire site content would be focused around tennis and tennis rackets.

Search engines like Google seem to prefer tightly-themed pages. But where does RSS figure in all this?RSS feeds, usually sourced from newsfeeds or blogs, often correspond to a particular theme or niche.By using highly targeted RSS feeds, you can enhance your site’s content without having to write a single line on your own. It?s like having your own content writer - writing theme-based articles for you - for free! How can RSS improve my Search Engine Rankings? There are three powerful reasons why content from RSS Feeds is irresistible bait for search engine spiders.1. RSS Feeds Provide Instant Themed ContentThere are several publishers of RSS feeds that are specific to a particular theme.Since the feed is highly targeted, it could contain several keywords that you want to rank highly for.Adding these keywords to your pages helps Google tag your site as one with relevant content.2. RSS Feeds Provide Fresh, Updated ContentRSS feeds from large publishers are updated at specific intervals.

When the publisher adds a new article to the feed, the oldest article is dropped. These changes are immediately effected on your pages with the RSS feed as well. So you have fresh relevant content for your visitors every hour or day.3. RSS Feeds Result in More Frequent SpideringOne thing I never anticipated would happen as a result of adding an RSS feed to my site was that the Googlebot visited my site almost daily. To the Googlebot, my page that had the RSS feed incorporated into it was as good as a page that was being updated daily, and in its judgement, was a page that was worth visiting daily. What this means to you, is that you will have your site being indexed more frequently by the Googlebot and so any new pages that you add to your site will be picked up much faster than your competitors. How does this benefit you as a marketer?Well, for example, let’s says a top Internet Marketer comes out with a new product that you review and write up a little article on, and that your competitors do the same.Google generally tends to index pages at the start of the month and if you miss that update, you will probably need to wait till the next month to even see your entry in.But, since your site has RSS feeds, it now gets indexed more frequently. So the chances of getting your page indexed quickly are much higher.

This gives you an advantage over the competition, as your review will show up sooner in the search results than theirs.Imagine what an entire month’s advantage could do to your affiliate sales!

Why Javascript Feeds Are Not EffectiveSome sites offer javascript code that generates content sourced from RSS feeds for your site. These are of absolutely no value in terms of search engine rankings, as the googlebot cannot read javascript and the content is not interpreted as part of your page. What you need is code that parses the RSS feed and renders the feed as html content that’s part of your page. This is achieved using server side scripting languages like PHP or ASP.

SEO Solutions for Small Business or Small Websites

May 11th, 2008 by Krunal

Online business is booming day by day.

Now days, Most of the Business has website. Some businesses sell their products or services through internet and some business developed their website with their company profile and their services just to demonstrate to their users.

It doesn’t matter whether website is used for selling online products/services or company profile and services demonstration, every business want their website should be found in all search engine like Google, MSN, Yahoo etc.

What do you do when you need to find something on the Internet? In most cases, you open any search engine such as Google or Yahoo and type in the term or phrase that you are looking for and then click through the results, right? Even now days, if you need to buy a digital camera, most of the people don’t go to market and find the cheapest and best digital camera shop to shop.

I have got a very small business, do I need website?

Yes, of course you need a website. At lease a very basic website. Because if you look back 5 years, you will find only 10% people use to find products or services online and now the percentage is more than 40% and within 3 to 4 years it will cover almost 80%. Therefore, if you don’t introduce your website now, it might be very late for you for finding the exact domain for your business.

What is the use of your web site if it cannot be found in any search engine?

Well, it is a very interesting question. If you have a very nice website but no one can find you and your services in Google or Yahoo etc. what is the use having the nice website then? Search Engine Optimization is the solution for that.
